RIP Bert Jansch

I WAS saddened to hear of the death of Bert Jansch, a primary influence on Jimmy Page and a generation of guitarists.

I met Jansch back in 1977 when I was performing at a Kent folk club (my earliest appearances were as a duo with a bongo player and we played in between sets by the main guest of the evening). During a break I asked Bert if he had caught our act, hoping for a word or two of encouragement, but sad to say he had been tuning up back stage and missed us!

I wonder what he would have said of my rudimentary strumming – like to think he would have seen some potential in those early songs though…
